Report on Red Bird Mission Trip

Pastor Rick sends this report on the trip to Red Bird Mission by the group of "Common Cup" people:

Dear Common Cup:

I thank you for your prayers and support of our recent mission trip to Red Bird in Beverly, KY. The work accomplished will make a lasting difference for Freddie and Sadie Smith. God brought our mission team together and gave us the ability to complete this work. God's presence sustained us throughout our mission trip experience. Here is a list of the work finished during our week at Red Bird.

Replaced two blinds

Removed four layers of carpet in the bedroom and hallway

Laid linoleum flooring in the bedroom and hallway

Custom cut and painted new baseboards in the bedroom and hallway

Painted the bedroom, hallway, and living room

Removed a sagging piece of 2' by 2' ceiling tile

Sheetrock, tape, and mud a new section of ceiling tile

Removed eight broken windows and old caulk

Install eight new windows and caulk

Custom fit and painted new shudders around the windows

Removed two layers of carpet in the living room

Install new carpet in the living room

Replaced the storm door and front door of the house

Remove and replace the kitchen counter top and sink

Patched walls in the closet

Removed old staples, nails, and tack strip from floor

Install flange over linoleum seams

Remove a wallpaper border

Washed ceiling fans and knickknacks

Drove a gentleman (George) to his doctor's appointment and some errands

Installed a false wall at Red Bird campus

Moved furniture at Red Bird campus

Loaded work van for the next mission team

While working with Mrs. Sadie she told us about her upcoming heart surgery on July 14. Please keep her in your prayers. Below is her address.

Esther Hofferbert in Auto Accident

Esther Hofferbert was in a very serious automobile accident a few days ago and is still under intensive care at Miami Valley Hospital.

She is in a neck brace with a cracked vertebrae, some compression concern in lower back, multiple bruises, and breathing problems. She wears a breathing mask to keep her lungs clear. Her hands are retrained because of the unbearable pain.

Esther is one of those people who lives to help others. She is a faithful member of Eleazer UMC and spends most of her time volunteering in the area.

Many of the desserts at the Wednesday night Food Court are Esther's

Her desserts at the Common Cup Dessert Auctions bring premium bids ("Chocolate to die for", etc).

She volunteers at the Spring Valley Senior Center's dining hall, doing the humble work of picking up trays and dishes and bringing refills to the diners. She also furnishes cakes & pies.

Esther is a retired registered nurse, earning her masters degree at Miami U and was a nursing instructor at Miami Valley Nursing School.

It looks as if Esther will have a long road back to recovery and the people at Eleazer and neighbors are already attending to some of her chores.

Esther needs our prayers to see her through. It may be early for too many hospital visits but sending her a card would certainly help her through.

A Gift To Pastor Robert From the CC Council

Last Thursday, June 18, 2009, the Common Cup Council presented Pastor Robert McDowell with a framed picture of individual views of each of the 15 CC churches.

He was also given a homemade (Marietta special) cherry pie, Robert's favorite.

The gifts were not only farewell presents but also to show him how much we love him and for his huge role in making the Common Cup such a success.

There is a whole list of people who worked to get the CC off the ground, but it was Robert who lit the fire and fanned the flames!

Richland Crumley: Building a Dream

June 19, 2009

Thirty five years ago Pastor Leonard Baxter, pastor at Richland UMC, sketched up some drawings to add an addition to the Richland building and update the facilities.

The members, small in number and short on finances, were not willing to make such a commitment. Today, Pastor Leonard is no longer with us, but his "add-on" dream is, using his drawings as a general layout.

His wife, Joan Baxter, tells about that dream as it comes to fruition in an article on our website.

The project, adding a Fellowship Room, rest rooms and office space is almost complete, and has progressed on a pay-as-you-go basis. The painting, plumbing, and electrical are complete and ready for the flooring.

A Night Out For Food Court Volunteers

Last Wednesday night (June 10, 2009), some 40 of the Food Court volunteers

were able to get together at one time and enjoy a night out at Young Jersey Dairy Inn.

It was lots of fun and the food was good - of course. (Virginia did it again!)

Information on the Upcoming West Ohio UMC Conference

Pastor Kay Hatch thought that many of the Common Cup suscribers would be interested in the following conference's press release concerning the focus in this year's Lakeside conference.

West Ohio United Methodists Focus on Leadership at Lakeside Conference

WORTHINGTON, Oh. - June 4, 2009 - Next week nearly 3000 United Methodists from Ohio will gather in Lakeside, Ohio from June 7-11 for their annual conference, Love in Action: Developing Leaders.

West Ohio's annual meeting will emphasize the development of principled Christian leaders for the church and the world, one of the Four Areas of Ministry Focus identified by the denomination. Churches across the conference will offer donations to the Love First Miracle Offering for leadership development in West Ohio and around the globe. In addition thousands of school kits created by local United Methodist churches will be laid at the altar before being distributed in the U.S. and around the globe to poverty-stricken areas.

Speakers:

Bruce R. Ough is the resident Bishop for the West Ohio Conference, and serves as spiritual leader for its nearly 220,000 members and 1200 congregations and affiliated ministries in Ohio. Bishop Ough has demonstrated a life-long commitment to social and racial justice, to local and global missions, and to strengthening the local church. He is president of the General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church and of the Ohio Council of Churches.

Junius Dotson is the senior pastor of Saint Mark UMC, the largest African-American church in the state of Kansas with more than 3500 members. Pastor Dotson is a gifted speaker and passionate transformational leader who is in demand as a motivational speaker, new church plant consultant, and spiritual life coach. Pastor Dotson will speak at the Monday morning and Tuesday afternoon worship services.


Mike Slaughter, lead pastor at Ginghamsburg Church in Tipp City, Ohio, is the three-decade dreamer at one of the largest United Methodist Churches in the world. Under Rev. Slaughter's leadership, Ginghamsburg UMC has become known for its innovative small group ministry, progressive cyber & media ministry, and its multi-million dollar missional investment in helping displaced persons in Darfur, Sudan. Rev. Slaughter will speak at the Wednesday morning worship.

Sue Nilson Kibbey is executive pastor at Ginghamsburg UMC where she teams with Mike Slaughter to create and deploy the vision of the church. As the creator of Ministry by Strengths, and author of Ultimately Responsible, Rev. Kibbey serves as a trainer, consultant and coach to conferences and clergy gatherings where she shares the art of leading and managing a church. Rev. Kibbey will speak Tuesday morning.


Highlights:
The Hope for Africa Children's Choir will perform during several worship services.

There will be a ministry fair, games, a Rock the Dock concert on Tuesday and Music in the Park on Wednesday. The feature film "Amazing Grace" will be shown at Lakeside's movie theatre.

Wednesday's Celebration Service, will be a traditional, pageantry filled sacramental service honoring clergy passages like ordination, commissioning, memorial and retirement.

Singer Tara Leigh Cobble will be offering music throughout the week and an Internet Cafe with cyber connections will be open daily.

Business:

This year's Annual Conference members will vote on nine conference Recommendations. Among the recommendations are proposals on healthcare issues and casino gambling.

Also on the docket will be a vote on thirty-two amendments to the United Methodist Constitution, the foundational document establishing and governing The United Methodist Church. Twenty-three of the amendments deal with the worldwide nature of the church, while the other nine concern a variety of topics. All orginated from 2008 General Conference action and United Methodist conferences worldwide will be voting on these amendments.

A Great Year For the Common Cup

What a great year it has been for the Common Cup! I think it's safe to say the Common Cup year just ended, considering the break in the Food Court and the Growth Group sessions.

And Boy- Oh- Boy ..... It's a JOY to see so many people involved in Common Cup activity. I know most other churches would looked at the fellowship of this organization and be green with envy. And think of the number of people who pitch in to make it work. In a few lines down, I inserted the thankful comments from Pastor Rick which I borrowed from the Faith Community newsletter. (Gives you some idea of the cooperative effort abounding.)

I must say a word for the Common Cup Council which meets monthly to oversee and plan the program activity. It is made up of all the member church pastors and laity representatives under the leadership of Chairperson Mary Frantz. Over the course of a few monthly meetings, all the 15 churches make contributions.

In the past May meeting, they are tentatively planning for another church tour. A date of April 11, 2010 might work out since the two churches with major building projects should be ready to "show off".

We need to give a big "thank you" to Mary and Pastor Rick (who shepherds & synchronizes the Wednesday night group activities - and the others who serve on the council.

Dear Common Cup,

I remember clearly my first night at Common Cup! It was an amazing experience to be a part of a ministry sponsored by 15 churches that offers a warm welcome, delicious meal, and growth groups to people in our community. Now, one year later, it still feels amazing every time I see the Community Center filled with life on Wednesday night. Thank you for allowing me to serve in this vital ministry. Also, I want to give thanks to all those who served during Common Cup this year.
