Historic Church Tour Concludes On Sunday

There may be a nip in the air tomorrow (Sunday) but by afternoon time,it should be a great day for the second (and last) church tour day.

The churches (see the list below) on the north side of "Common Cup Country" will hold open house from 1pm to 5pm.

There should be maps available at your church giving church addresses and a suggested route. The churches:

Evangelical UMC holds special interest in that it emerged as a United Methodist church through its United Brethren roots. The building was originally used as a Theological School.

Union UMC is the oldest United Methodist church in Greene County and an outgrowth of services held in Frederick Bonner's home starting in 1803.

The present New Jasper UMC is the third structure of a congregation dating back to 1810.  A unique "Upping Block" still remains from the Horse & Buggy  days.

The Jamestown UMC building may surprise you with the sanctuary on the second floor. It is a wonderful facility with its share of history.

The history of Cedarville UMC's sanctuary  is punctuated by a huge pipe organ. Although no longer producing music on Sunday morning, one can imagine its imposing resonance in by-gone days.

The Oldtown UMC  building was contructed in 1855 and had a number of additions including a basement, restrooms, a kitchen and a steeple structure.  In 1962 the members bought the next-door house for an Education & office usage.

Faith Community UMC has the largest facility among the Common Cup churches, including a multi-purpose  community room where the Common Cup sponsored Food Court and Growth Groups gather on Wednesday nights.

If you are interested in local history or simply curious about the other churches, this will make for an enjoyable afternoon.
