2012 Guatemala Mission Trip Meeting.

Mission Trip to Henderson Settlement

Henderson Settlement Mission Trip 

 Common Cup is planning a mission trip to Henderson Settlement in Frakes, Kentucky next spring. 

All members and friends of our Common Cup churches are welcome to participate on this mission trip.  Participants should be in high school or older. 

Frakes, Kentucky is located in the Laurel Fork Valley of Southeastern Kentucky. 

The dates of the trip are April 15-18, 2012.  

We will leave from Faith Community around 1 pm on Sunday, April 15 and return in the early afternoon on Wednesday, April 18.  The total cost of the trip is $90/person which includes transportation, meals, and lodging.  We will use the church van for transportation.  You can use a personal vehicle at your own expense.  Meals covered on the trip are Sunday dinner, all three meals on Monday and Tuesday, and breakfast on Wednesday.  We will sleep either in a campus home at Henderson or on the lower bunks in the dorm with separate rooms for guys and girls.  Dorms are accessible. 

This is not a busy time of year, so we will have plenty of space. 

 During our two work days you can expect to help in the greenhouse, work on campus, or assist with a home repair project.  All work will match the skill level of participants.  During our last visit to Henderson we planted flower beds and built a raised vegetable garden. 

In the evening, Henderson staff will provide educational programs and you can enjoy some free time in the mountains. 

The purpose of this mission trip is to strengthen the partnership between our Common Cup Churches and Henderson Settlement, grow in our understanding of missions, create friendships with one another, and share the love of God with the people of Kentucky. 

Many thanks to Ruthanne and Bill Lamb who will host our group during this mission trip! 

Please register with Pastor Rick.  You will need to read a 5 page Work Camp Handbook, complete medical release forms, and make your payment by January 31. 
 
The Common Cup Council is providing $500 towards our projects which is why the cost of the trip is lower than it would have been otherwise.

CROP Walk: a Joyful Success

Dear Friends:

Thank you for supporting the 2011 Xenia Area CROP Walk. 

I appreciate all who came out for the walk.  It was a beautiful day. 

 About 40 people came and we raised $1632 as of today. 

These are the groups that participated: AHOP, Bellbrook United Methodist, Eleazer United Methodist, Faith Community United Methodist, Key Club, and New Jasper United Methodist. 

The top fundraiser was Alyssa Pestian from Bellbrook who raised $139.

Movie Coming To Dayton Area

The acclaimed movie "Courageous" is coming to the Dayton area opening starting this Friday, September 30th.

The movie will be shown at The Greene (Rave Theater) and the Fairfield Mall (Regal Hollywood Theater) and Huber Heights Cinema and others at $12.50  (See below for reduced price tickets).

This is a great Christian movie featuring 4 Sheriff Deputies and emphasizing the need for men to take responsibly. It is funny, emotional, and exciting and a movie to help men see themselves through the tools of this movie.

Special pricing was arranged by the Miami Valley District United Methodist Men. John Sherer has some 20 tickets left for the Sunday, October 2nd matinee showings. These tickets are for the Huber Heights  Cinema at reduced price of $7.75 compared to the regular price of $12.50.


The reduced price Tickets for the Huber Heights Cinema will be on sale Wednesday night at Common Cup. Bring cash or a check made out to FCUMC noting for Courageous movie (or you can call John Sherer at 372-2204 to reserve your tickets).

CROP Walk In Xenia On Sunday Afternoon

The annual CROP Walk is This Sunday, September 25, 2011, at 2 pm beginning at Shawnee Park in Xenia. 

The CROP walk is a hunger walk sponsored by Church World Service. 

25% of the proceeds benefit the FISH Food pantry.  

There is no requirement to sign up - just be at Shawnee Park at 2pm. You'll enjoy the walk -not only for the exercise but for knowing you are doing it for a good cause.

There are a choice of walking distances - short walk or longer walks.

  

Let us work together to end hunger in Xenia.

The Common Cup Mission trip is coming up soon. The group leaves on June 26 and will return on July 2.

Pastor Rick prepared a prayer guide for each day which also gives a little insight to their daily activity.  CLICK HERE for a copy.

Why not print out a copy and hold it close by as we go about our daily prayers.

It will give us a kindred feeling of being with the group as they go about their mission.

Schneider House's Golf Marathon Is Coming Up

---

The Schneider House (Interfaith Hospitality Network)  of Greene County is holding their annual Golf Marathon on May 16^th . 

This is their most important fundraiser of the year and are looking for golfers to sign up.

They will be playing at the WGC Golf Course on Country Club Drive, Xenia.

Each golfer will attempt to play as many holes as he or she can on that day, up to 100 holes.

To raise funds for the Schneider House, the golfers need subscribers to pledge so much for each hole they play (or you could just make a one time pledge -but wouldn't it be more fun to see how long your golfer can hold up?).

Men's Breakfast At Otterbein Lebanon Is Coming Up

Otterbein Lebanon Men's fellowship is holding yet another of its annual breakfasts at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 12, in the dining room of their main building.

Many of the area's United Methodist men and men's fellowships have attended this event for many years.

The food is good (with plenty of seconds) served mainly by the resident ladies and some enjoyable toe-tapping singing from the men's chorus. The event is topped of with an excellent speaker, be it Bishop Ough,or a noted seminary profesor or a preacher from Earlham College turned comedian.

This year should be no exception. Rev. Brian Brown, currently teaching pastor at Ginghamsburg UMC and the newly appointed Ohio River Valley District superintendent, will speak at 10 a.m

So get your men's group together, give them a call  by Mar.9^th and let them know how many are in your group.

Ignite Campus Ministry - Pancake Breakfast

Pancake Breakfast - Faith Community UM and the United Methodist Men will host a pancake breakfast fundraiser for the Ignite campus ministry at Wright State University. 

This is your opportunity to meet some students, talk about their latest activities on campus, and enjoy a wonderful breakfast and music.  The breakfast is Saturday, March 5 from 8:00am -10:00am. 

Our suggested donations are adults:  $5.00,  Children under 12:  $3.00,  and a Family Ticket:  $12.00.  Pancakes, sausage, fresh fruit, coffee and juice is on the menu.

Big Band Performs At Thanksgiving Service

---

Did you catch the Big Band Thanksgiving Service on November 14^th?

Ray Foster's Nostalgia Big Band performed at a Community Thanksgiving service in The Faith Community UMC sanctuary.

It was co-sponsored by the Xenia Area Association of Churches & Ministries and titled

 "Make a Joyful Noise Unto the Lord".

You never saw so many smiling faces at the program's conclusion.

The really neat thing about the music was that each selection was linked to a Bible scripture, each of which were read by a clergy or lay person.

And if you missed the performance, never fear, I just received a message from Glen Shaw that a Christmas concert will be held on December 19th at the same location. Here's Glen's message:

' The Community Christmas Concert Band will present a program of Christmas Music on December 19, 2010 at 3:00 P.M. in the Sanctuary at Faith Community United Methodist Church, located at 100 Country Club Dr. in Xenia.
The newly formed band is under the direction of Glen Shaw and Ray Foster. This group is made up of fine musicians from all over the Miami Valley area, hence the name "Community".

The program will consist of both sacred and secular music and will last approximately one hour. Admission is free and all are welcome to attend. Please consider attending this event to celebrate the birth of our Savior.'

The Miami Valley District United Methodist Men are holding their Fall Get-Together at Stillwater United Methodist church on Oct. 26th. It should be a very interesting program with a discussion of the course, "Understanding Men's  Ministry". It was developed by Man in the Mirror and endorsed by the General Commission on United Methodist Men.

Lunch For a Cause

How about lunch out next Sunday and support for a worthy cause at the same time?
 'Join us on Sunday, October 10th at Noon for "Lunch for a Cause" in the FCUMC Community Center.
 Pick up your "free" ticket this Wednesday, October 6th, at Common Cup.
A freewill offering will be accepted to help replace the roof of the school in Pachitulul, Guatemala. The roof was heavily damaged by Hurricane Agatha in May.

News From St Paul

News from St. Paul (the UM church, that is - consult your Bible for the other one)

As most of you know, St Paul UMC is our district's mission church. A number of our Common Cup churches have served Tuesday meals there and know what an amazing calling is happening . St. Paul not only serves meals to the needy but maintains a clothing store and emergency food pantry in addition attending to the spiritual needs of many who come -some carrying their earthly possessions in a bag.

Presently, St Paul is in a pastoral transition and they have come up with a an idea which I think is pretty neat. Here's a quote from their October newsletter:

"We at St. Paul UMC are constantly blessed by the groups that come to prepare and serve the weekly community lunches on Tuesday. These volunteers form real partnership between their churches and St. Paul. '

"Because of the recent pastoral changes, a new opportunity for mission has occurred. We are asking that when a group comes to serve lunch, whenever possible, they invite their pastor,
student pastor or lay speaker to give the five to ten minute message during the worship service at 11:30 a.m. At this time, several of our churches have committed to this project."

If your church has not already signed up for a Tuesday meal in 2011, you'd better hurry - because there are only 4 signup dates left.

They are January 4, January 25, May 31 and November 29.

And since Christmas is right around the corner (at least the department stores think so), you might want to add St Paul to your shopping list.

St Paul is holding a Parent's Christmas Shop (Dec 4^th) giving struggling parents the opportunity to shop for their children, offering items at 1/5 of actual valve.

Donations of new items are needed:  Toys & Games age birth-17, Sports equipment, Bikes/Scooters, Electronics such as DVD players, IPODS, stereos and Gift Certificates (K-Mart, Best Buy, etc)

Also, a Children's Santa Shop is planned (Dec 6^th) where children & Youth in the various Youth/Children's programs can select gifts, free of charge, and the selection will be wrapped, tagged & sent home to put under the Christmas tree.

Please consider a donation to this worthy cause. Donations of some of the items listed above - or a cash donation- or a gift card  can be sent to:

Red Bird Mission Trip Information

 

For those in the Common Cup area who are interested in the upcoming Red Bird Mission trip, Pastor Rick has provided some necessary information:

October 2011

                Grace and peace to you in the name of Jesus Christ.  Thank you for your interest in the Red Bird Mission trip next summer.  I am looking forward to serving with you. 

  

Soon, we will see the leaves begin to drop from the trees.  Winter will come shortly after and bring frosty mornings and cover the ground with snow.  When the seasons change there are many visible signs.  Yet, unseen to our eyes is the way creation is preparing to bring forth new life in spring from the dormant days of winter.    

          

 I believe this is how God's spirit is at work within our mission team.  Unseen to our eyes God is already preparing a place for our group to serve next summer.  I am not surprised when our group and the homeowner seem like a perfect match.  God brings us together.  Attending meetings, filling out papers, and getting to know other group members may seem unimportant, but these duties are necessary if we are to work with God in bringing forth new life on our trip. 

      

In the upcoming months, please know you are in my prayers.  As much as a mission trip is about giving to our neighbors, it is even more about receiving God's grace from the people that we serve or are serving with, sometimes in unexpected ways.  You are in my prayers.    

                For our mission trip we will travel to Beverly, KY and work with Red Bird Mission. 

The trip is Sunday, June 26 through Saturday, July 2, 2011.  The Faith Community Church van is available for our trip. 

 You will receive a packet after your first deposit is received.  Please remember that the first deposit is due no later than Nov. 15.  Please make checks payable to "Faith Community United Methodist" with 'Red Bird' in the memo.  I will call Red Bird before Thanksgiving to adjust our reservation - so it matches our deposits.  There are a limited number of scholarships available that will pay half of the cost.  Please don't hesitate if you have any questions.

Payment schedule

The total cost of the Red Bird Mission Trip is $350 per person.  This amount includes the costs for Red Bird and transportation.  It does not include meals on the road or our Wednesday day trip expenses.  Usually we visit Cumberland Falls and eat at a buffet on   March 1, 2011 will be the last day to register for Red Bird and receive a refund on your deposits.  After March 1 all payments are non-refundable. 

Below is a payment schedule.  

First Deposit of $50 is due by November 15, 2010. 

Second Deposit of $150 is due by March 1, 2011.

Final Deposit of $150 is due by May 1, 2011.

Dedication of Interfaith Hospitality Building

Sunday, August 1^st has been a long time in coming for Don Schneider, the Project manager for the renovation of the old St. Francis hotel building.

The building, located at 124 S. Detroit Street in Xenia was donated to the Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) on November 27, 2002 by Brad and Eric Montgomery of the Montgomery Insurance & Investment agency.

 Don, also an IHN Board member, along with Don Seela, Engineer, and a host of faithful volunteers, have been working every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday for seven years- stopping only when monetary donations ran short.

The renovation priority was: Don't take construction short cuts even if funds were running low.

Finally, a building which all can proud of - is finished!

The Dedication Ceremony was held on Sunday, August 1^st. A nice crowd attended.   In appreciation, they were treated to a Spaghetti dinner.

The Interfaith Hospitality Network is a national, non-profit organization whose goal is to alleviate homelessness by providing shelter, meals, and assistance for homeless persons. The Greene County IHN has been open since 1995 but has been relying on area churches, since they had no permanent facility of their own.

We must mention that the Common Cup took a humble role in sponsoring one of the rooms through donations and volunteer labor.

I have no long list of all the supporters of the renovation, but I must point out that Faith Community UMC has been very generous in their support.

The highlight of that Sunday afternoon dedication was springing the news on Don Schneider that the old hotel building on which he worked so hard, will forever more be known as "The Schneider House"

2010/2011 Common Cup Handbooks Available

The Common Cup Handbooks 2010-2011 are available for pick up. 

Copies are in the church office at Faith Community UMC. 

Office hours are 8AM to 4PM Mon thru Fri.
Pastor Tettau is suggesting that the churches take a number of books equal to  ½ of their average worship attendance.

All-Church Community Picnic on Sat. Aug 28

The Xenia Area Association of Churches and Ministries are having a community outing. 


 The All-Church Community picnic will be held on Sunday, August 29 at Shawnee Park. 
Games and Inflatables will open at 4pm.

The FOOD LINE will start at 5pm  and Music at the Main Pavilion will be playing from 4-8pm.

You are asked to bring a side dish and rolls or dessert.
 
Fried Chicken, Drinks and Paper Goods will be provided.

United Methodist Campus Ministry at Wright State

Remember the Pancake Breakfast held at Faith Community church last November to support the United Methodist campus ministry at Wright State?

That campus ministry initiative is still very active but needs support to remain strong. They tag themselves, "IGNITE"

Rick Tettau (Deacon at Faith Community) is encouraging the Common Cup churches to consider ways to support this ministry for young students. His message:

"IGNITE: The United Methodist Campus Ministry at Wright State is asking for support from churches this school year. 

 IGNITE offers to WSU students a weekly Tuesday night meal and Bible study, leadership training for prospective clergy, monthly Friday game nights, and a beautiful apartment for rest and study. 

The campus ministry is under the leadership of Derick Latimer who is currently seeking ordination and a degree from UTS.  He is excited to be starting his first year as the campus minister.  If you would like to be supportive of the campus ministry and get to know some great students, please contact Derick at 937-726-8549.

Common Cup Room at IHN is Complete & Furnished

The Common Cup Bedroom at the IHN Family Center is complete!
IHN Family Center on South Detroit Street in Xenia. 

Almost two years ago the Common Cup Council voted to adopt a bedroom at the

IHN, also known as Interfaith Hospitality Network, supports homeless families in Greene County.  IHN provides families with a place to live and food to eat until they are able to secure permanent housing.

Our commitment to this bedroom involved making a donation of two thousand dollars, renovating the bedroom, and providing furniture and linens. 
The money for the project came from our Wednesday night Common Cup meal earnings.
 Numerous people from our churches were involved in cleaning, painting, and sanding the room.  This week Leanna and George Anzek bought the furniture, bed spreads, pictures, and valence.  The colors are a combination of white, green, and orange.  The quilt hanging over the chair was donated by Genevieve Jones. The quilt adds a personal touch to this very nice room.  It will be a place where a family will call home for a short time.    (Matthew 25:34-40) 

A deep and heartfelt thank you for all those who were involved in this project.  May your service be a blessing to families for years to come.
