Medical Mission To Brazil

The following was submitted by Lisa Kuhbander, Communications Coordinator at Union Church, regarding a medical mission trip to Brazil:

"Linda Johannes [member at Union UMC] has just arrived  home from a 10 day mission trip in Brazil.  This is through an organization called Central Brazil Mission   http://www.cbm.org.br/new/index.php.

This is Linda's second trip.  This time she went with a different group, which included the founders of CBM, a few medical professionals, medical support staff, ship captain, co-captain,  a cook, an interpreter.

Her journey began when Linda and her team  landed at a sea port in Mananus.  From there,  they boarded a medical boat, which was stocked with vitamins, medication and other essentials.

They traveled down the Amazon River to villages, giving much needed aid to the village people.  Each person who needs medical care is given vitamins, most need de-worming medication, and they are all evaluated  by the doctor.  If there is anything else the person needs, there is a pharmacy available.  Linda's job was that of a physician's assistant.  She handed out the medication.  With the help of the contributions from the Union Church members, she was able to bring 3 suitcases full of medication to help stock the boat.

There are sleeping quarters on the boat, and as the crew slept, the Captain  piloted them to a new village.

The language spoken is Brazilian Portuguese, and an interpreter is available.  Linda learned some of the language while she was there.

We're glad she arrived back safely."
