A Handy Little Tool For Food Court Volunteers

My pal, Bill, has worked up a little search routine where you can determine upcoming meals for which you are scheduled to work.

In this way you won't have to search through the big detailed schedule sheets to find your name.

And ...  you may want to know when your bosom buddy is working - you can look that up too.

Here's how:

1.  Goto our Common Cup website and click on [ Food Court Volunteer Schedules ]

( It's just below Virginia's characterture)

2. Then look for and click on  [If you would like to SEARCH the schedule dates for a given volunteer click here]

3. Just enter the last & first name, then click on  [ Submit Search ]

4. Bingo!

The schedule for the rest of the year, for the person entered, pops up.

If you like, you can print it out for reference.

What the search will not do:

It will not look backward - it won't list work nights for the past weeks.

It won't account for the Wednesday nights when you have asked someone to sub for you. You can pencil that in.

Do You Like Good Music?

Union Church At It Again

This Saturday, Oct. 17th, Union UMC is having another one of their Chicken Noodle suppers, located at the corner of Washington Rd & Union Rd.

They will be serving from 4:30 to 7:00pm.

Not only do they make great chicken & noodles but they give you plenty to eat for your money!

Church Service Will Be At Union Church This Sunday

Here are some of the details of the Happy Ending fire at Union church.

Lighting struck the steeple at about 4am.  It didn't burst into an open fire until about 7am.

There are two real heroes in this story.

First, Laura Aldridge, who lives next door to the church, heard the lighting hit around 4am but was unaware of any consequences. When she was leaving for work, at 7am, she noticed a puff of smoke on the church steeple and immediately called 911.

Minutes later 3 Fire Departments were on the scene and Spring Valley was on the road.

By that time the steeple was engulfed in open flames and hot chucks were falling on the roof. One spot on the roof was starting to smolder. (See Laura's photo below which she took after calling 911)

Second, the volunteer firefighters, in pouring rain, climbed ladders and somehow made it up a rain sleek roof to reach the bell tower. They had to chop a small hole in the roof to make sure the smoldering was extinguished.  

[Update: We learned that even though the roof was of asphalt shingles, the steeple exterior was slate- and so the slate served to contain the fire long enough til the firemen arrived.]

The boom on the Xenia South's equipment was raised and started pumping water into the flames. There were plenty of water trucks (or whatever the official name is) to keep the water stream going - since there are no fire hydrants in that township neighborhood.

It was about 9am before they were sure the fire was completely doused.

The amazing thing is that only a few spills of water reached the sanctuary.

The two heroes, Laura Aldridge and the volunteer firemen saved Union Church, with all its tradition, from major disaster!!!

The ironic factor is the church had a grounded lighting rod on the steeple. Shows what a powerful strike it was (it shook my house some dozen houses away.)

One more story: Laura called her father, Russell Curtis, after phoning 911 and told him the church was on fire. Russell, a member of Eleazer church, immediately thought that Eleazer was on fire, jumped in his car and headed that way. Believe it or not, he was no sooner on the road when he heard on the radio that Union church was on fire.

You can't tell me that God didn't have a hand in all of this......

Union Fire Confined To Bell Tower

The latest report from the Union UM Church Trustees is that the lighting strike and fire did minimum  damage to the interior of the building. A small amout of water dripped and was quickly dried up with a towel.
As far as anyone could tell, the bell was OK but did get a good bath.
We counted the Xenia South, Xenia North and Spring Valley Fire departments responding.
The insurance company, Xenia Glass, & Ready Electric were on the scene by 10:30am.
Russell Curtis' daughter, who lives next door, reported the fire (some said it was around 4am)

We know there will be some seen & unseen problems for the church to deal with, but thank the Good Lord that it wasn't any worse.

Lighting Strikes Union Church

A few hours ago lighting struck the bell tower at Union UM church and started a fire.

I was there at 9am  and took the photos seen below. They were still pouring water into the bellfrey at that time.

Pastor Rick sends this message:

"Lightning struck the bell tower at Union UMC and set it on fire.  It is contained.  The Trustees are on site evaluating the damage.  Pastor Sandy will let me know how Common Cup can support Union UMC.  I'll follow up after I hear from her. "

I live on Washington Rd and I can tell you there were two load booms which Ihaven'y heard the likes of for some time.

The Hayride Is This Saturday Night

Eleazer Church is having their big hayride this Saturday night.
According to Russell Curtis, there will two wagons with plenty of room and they want you to know that all of you are invited.
It starts at 6pm and they ask that you bring a side or dessert for the delicious meal to be enjoyed later ( Permission slips are required for youths without an accompanying adult)
If you want to join those leaving Faith Community, be there at 5pm (return by 9pm).  If you need directions to Eleazer UMC Click Here.  It's a the intersection of Spring Valley Paintersville Rd and Eleazer Rd.
Hayrides are a barrel of fun and probably alot of singing going on as you meander along in the crisp evening air.
