A new Common Cup Year with Food & Faith

Ten years and going strong!
The Common Cup enters its second decade in an operation that sprung up from grass roots and formed a band of churches that must have our Lord "justa smiling".

But there was not always the conviction that the Common Cup would work.  Some of the early believers in the project were names like Williams, Putman, Pramer, Ledbetter, Vahle,  McDowell and others. Because of faith based goals,  it was going to happen.

The center piece is the Wednesday night Food Court and Growth Group but there is a number of other "help each other" tasks going on among the churches.

The Food Court leadership has been outstanding with Virginia (and Phyllis before her) - not only with the food management but the Christian purpose behind it.

And the volunteers have been terrific: Marrietta and Bonnie-  my, my, my. Lee and Janet, Harry and Wendell, Rosie and Ann, George faithfully bringing pizza, Pete and Gene, Sandy and Cathy, Ray and Dick, Marguerite's and Esther's desserts, Fielden and Russell ...... and I left the best ones off the list.

Bev Smith takes over for Virginia and already looks as if she has settled in nicely.

Don't forget Susan Fellie and the Youth leaders who have invited the youth from other churches to join in on Wednesday night  and participate in the mission trips.

But how about Rick Tettau who is the pastoral support for the Common Cup and is singularly responsible for organizing the Growth Group program each year plus other Common Cup events such as the mission trips, Ash Wednesday service, Common Cup yearly booklet, etc.

There have been great leaders in the Growth Group sessions and if you haven't attended one or more of these, you have missed a great opportunity. People pay money to hear the likes of these qualified leaders.

And then there is the Common Cup Council Board -maybe many are not aware it even exists - which is the oversight of the Food Court operation. The board watches the expenses to avert operational losses and any financial gains are dedicated to needs of others. They strive to make Wednesday night as enjoyable as possible and make it as easy as possible on the volunteer help.

A couple of years ago they saw that standing in long lines to purchase a ticket was a tiring experience and altered the procedure to allow ticket purchasers to sit at tables until their number was called.

Mary Frantz is in her last term as chair of the Council Board and what a terrific job she has done

The Common Cup pays no rent or wear and tear maintenance charges to Faith Community which is the host church.  Faith Community also apportions their staff to Common Cup needs. This is radical hospitality at its finest !

A few weeks ago, Pastor Rick paid tribute to the ten successful years for the Common Cup in his Sunday morning sermon, entitled "Food & Faith"

Carnival Time In Spring Valley

THE CARNIVAL IS COMING TO TOWN - to Spring Valley, that is!
The Spring Valley UM church is holding a big Street Carnival this Saturday, August 25th .

A portion of Vine Street  (adjacent to the church)  will be closed off for carnival games and activities (3pm-7pm) and a Dance Party and Springo (7pm-9pm).

Each of the games/activities will be run by a church family along with a Hot Dog Stand, Cotton Candy, Sno Cones, and Popcorn machines

This is a huge undertaking for the church but a great organizing committee has it under control.

So come on down - it's going to be lots of fun!!
One can of food (for the church Food pantry) or $1 buys 10 game tickets
.See details below:
