Common Cup Group To Henderson Settlement
A merry band of 18, under the sponsorship of the Common cup, spent time (April 16-18) at Henderson Settlement as a volunteer work group (It would have been even merrier had not Sandy Pramer gone on the injured list)
The group: Larry & Mary Russell, John Sherer, Bill & Sally Brown, Jim Thompson, Leta Thordsen, Cindy Liming, John & Joanne Fristoe, Harry & Alice Osman, Gene Straley, Connie House, Rosalie Griffy, Bonnie Weimer, and Brenda Boroff. Also, Bill & Rurthanne Lamb preceded the group in a leadership capacity.
Henderson Settlement, as many of you know, is part of the Red Bird Conference. It was established in 1925 by a Methodist minister, Hiram Frakes, in an effort to start a much needed school system and achieve a spiritual reform for the community.
At the time there was a real "Hatfield & McCoy" atmosphere where moonshining was prevalent and feudal killing was commonplace.
It seems absolutely amazing that Parson Frakes, with no resources of his own, would convince a bunch of feuding moonshiners to donate land for his vision. All together, they donated 122 acres. From that start, Henderson Settlement has grown to 1,600 acres and serves one of the poorest areas in the country with a broad variety of needed services.
Part of our group went out 25 miles to do repairs to a lady's house- including porch repair, interior ceiling and floor repair, roof repair and to replace a window (ask one of them how the window repair went).
The rest of the group mainly worked in the greenhouse, taking germinated vegetable and flower seedling and transplanting them into pots for sale. Others worked sorting donated clothing and sorting seed packages for sale
As far as one knows, all returned without smashed fingers, broken bones, poison ivy or food poisoning.
