Fw: Bible Study Added To Wednesday Night Agenda

A new Bible study has been added to the Wednesday  night Common Cup agenda (beginning Jan. 13th).

This Bible study adds to the already excellant Growth Group subjects which we described in a previous newsletter

Here are some of the details of the new Bible study:

Common Cup Bible study - The Common Cup Bible study will focus on some of the lesser known books of the Bible.  We will read a book of the Bible before class, discuss major themes in our small group, and talk about how the book offers a missional focus for the church today.  The first class will focus on 1 Corinthians.  Classes will meet in Room 6 on Wednesday nights at Faith Community beginning on January 13.  The class will meet for 5 weeks.  Pastor Rick will lead the class.

Call For Help Is Answered

In our Christmas Eve newsletter, Virginia Pinkerton asked if there was someone who could fill in for the Fosters and deliver Wednesday Night meals to shut-ins for the month of January.
She has received 4 volunteers already!!
Is that what Christmas (christian) giving is all about .... or what ?
Good for them.

CAN YOU HELP?

TO:  John & Joanne Fristoe  at jefristoe@gmail.com

Virginia Pinkerton, our Food Court coordinator, needs someone to deliver Wednesday night meals to shut-ins for the month of January.  Here is her message:
"Ray and Jackie Foster usually deliver meals to 2 families of shut-ins at 5 pm and then come back and eat at Common Cup themselves.  They will be out of town for the month of January and would like someone to deliver meals to them.  The deliveries are on Pavey Place so it is not far.  I was hoping  we could find some volunteers to provide this service to those 2 families.
Virginia"
If you could spare some Wednesday night time in January, it would be much appreciated.
Please call Virginia at 766-5670 or email her at  virginia.pinkerton@att.net

Search For New Conference Treasurer

Mary Frantz [Bellbrook UMC] lets us know of Bishop Ough's letter concerning the retirement of long time Conference treasurer, Stan Sutton and the search for his replacement.

Rev. Stan has not only been a good treasurer but a good speaker & advocate for the mission of the West Ohio Conference.
Bishop Ough's letter:
Subject: CFO/Director of Administration Position Announcement
OHIO WEST AREA OF THE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH ______________________________________________________________________
BRUCE R. OUGH, Resident Bishop                 JOYCE E. FRY, Assistant to the Bishop
Karen M. Martin, Executive Secretary              Tim McCoy, Executive Secretary

December 1, 2009

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

Grace and peace to you from God, our Creator, and the Lord Jesus Christ.

I have been working very closely with the Conference Council on Finance and Administration to put in place a plan to replace our conference treasurer, Rev. Stan Sutton, upon his retirement this coming June.  We are at a point in the process where your participation is critical.

First, this is a very important position within the conference and who we select is, likewise, of great significance.  Please pray for those involved in the process that they may have the wisdom and discernment to identify the best candidate.  Please pray that God's call to the willing and able is heard and that those who hear the call respond.  Finally, please pray for the conference, whose administrative leadership impacts so many facets of the work of the church in making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

Second, please share the availability of this position with your congregation.  We have redefined the position and it is now called CFO and Director of Administration of the West Ohio Conference.  In addition to fulfilling the roles and responsibilities of conference treasurer as defined in The Book of Discipline, this person will serve as my chief of staff and provide broad administrative leadership on many matters of the conference, including leadership on implementing our vision, goals and objectives; human resources and benefits administration; and coordination of financial and administrative activities across the various conference and district offices.  This person will continue to serve as a member of my Extended Cabinet.
The description being used in our outreach to identify the ideal candidate can be found on our conference website by clicking here.  Please encourage qualified candidates you know to consider making themselves available for consideration.

Thank you for your help in ensuring your conference leadership provides the support you need to fulfill our mission in the world.  May God continue to bless your faithful and fruitful work and witness.

Yours in Christ,

Bruce R. Ough

Common Cup is planning a mission trip to Henderson Settlement in Frakes, Kentucky next spring.

All members and friends of our Common Cup churches are welcome to participate on this mission trip. Participants should be in high school or older. Frakes, Kentucky is located in the Laurel Fork Valley of Southeastern Kentucky.

The dates of the trip are April 18 through April 21, 2010.

We will leave from Faith Community around 1 pm on Sunday, April 18 and return in the early afternoon on Wednesday, April 21. The total cost of the trip is $85/person which includes transportation, meals, and lodging.

We will use the church van for transportation. You can use a personal vehicle at your own expense. Meals covered on the trip are Sunday dinner, all three meals on Monday and Tuesday, and breakfast on Wednesday. We will sleep either in a campus home at Henderson or on the lower bunks in the dorm with separate rooms for guys and girls. Dorms are accessible. This is not a busy time of year, so we will have plenty of space.

During our two work days you can expect to help in the greenhouse, work on campus, or assist with a home repair project. All work will match the skill level of participants.

In the evenings Henderson staff will provide an educational program and you can enjoy some free time in the mountains.

The purpose of this mission trip is to develop a partnership between our Common Cup Churches and Henderson Settlement, grow in our understanding of missions, create friendships with one another, and share in the love of God with the people of SE Kentucky.

Many thanks to Ruthanne and Bill Lamb who will host our group during this mission trip!

Please register with Pastor Rick for this trip. You will need to read a 6 page Work Camp Handbook, sign a covenant, complete medical release forms, and make your payment by January 31. These forms are available in the office or you can have them sent to you. Just email Pastor Rick at AssocPastor@fcum.org with your preference. The Common Cup Council is offering up to $500 in scholarship funds to those interested in the mission trip.

For more information about the trip or scholarship funds, please contact Pastor Rick.

No More Standing In Line On Wednesday!

Good News for those who do not like to stand in line on Wednesday night at the Food Court!

Virginia and her staff are installing a new procedure starting next Wednesday night. It goes something like this:

Instead of standing in line to fill your tray, you will enter and pay the cashier (Ann or Phyllis), receive a numbered ticket and take a seat at any table. If you like, you can get your beverage and be sipping on it as you sit and wait for your number to be called.

When Ann/Phyllis calls your number, your called numbers can proceed to the serving line.
Hopefully, things will run smoothly.
This arrangement will continue through the rest of the year.
If you find that you like it, then it will be the ongoing arrangement.

We would like to hear what you think about the "Take a Number" idea.

(At the end of thi message, you will see the word "comments" .

District's United Methodist Men Meet At Faith Community

The quarterly meeting of the Miami Valley United Methodist Men was held at Faith Community last Tuesday night.

John Sherer does a great job as its president and hit the jackpot with Tuesday's program.
The featured speaker was Dr. Chris Heckerman, our District Superintendent and folks, if you haven't heard him speak..... well, you gotta hear him.

The other treat was the Sidney First UM Men's Chorus  ....  And they are as good as any professional group(30 voices strong).  And yet, we found out that not many sing in church choirs, not many can actually read music or have had vocal training.  We suspect much of the credit is due a very energetic director.

To view a few scenes from the Tuesday meeting, goto the Photo Gallery on our website.

The local UMM meet every month at Faith Community - but not only FCUM men but all men of the Common Cup churches.

Do You Really Want Gambling in Our Neighborhood?

John Sherer, president of the Miami Valley United Methodist Men & member of Faith Community sends this concern & our United Methodist position regarding Issue #3:
"The Dayton paper article today indicates that 59% of the people polled support  issue # 3. We have our work cut out for us if we are to defeat this issue."

The United Methodist Church and Issue 3 Casino Gambling

For the fifth time in 19 years, The United Methodist Church and the Ohio Council of Churches are successfully mobilizing tens of thousands of voters from many faith communities to vote against casino gambling in Ohio.  The gambling industry has mounted a well funded and deceptive marketing campaign to introduce predatory gambling into our neighborhoods.  Issue 3, on the ballot in November, is a dangerous proposal which inserts new language into the Ohio Constitution, and creates a monopoly to run casinos in four Ohio communities.  We call for an extensive effort to stop casino gambling from harming our citizens for these reasons:

Our position on gambling is consistent with our beliefs as United Methodists.
The United Methodist Church is very clear. Our Social Principles state that "gambling is a menace to society, deadly to the best interests of moral, social, economic and spiritual life and destructive of good government."-2008 United Methodist Discipline, Paragraph 163,G.  We also live by these Three Simples Rules from the founder of Methodism, John Wesley - Do no harm, do good, and stay in love with God.  Gambling does harm to families, economies, business and changes the fabric of life in communities.

Casinos create an illusion of free money.
The lingering economic downturn in our state and around the globe is frightening and devastating to individuals, families and institutions.  There is incredible pressure on our state and community leaders to turn to the lure of casino gambling as the answer to our economic woes. We understand this.  Noted economists call this "casino capitalism."  Casino capitalism contributes to an illusion of free money by preying on those least able to afford it.  Across America, predatory gambling has helped create a culture based on financial gimmicks, false hopes and pure chance.  This culture has led to and perpetuates the massive economic crisis we find ourselves in today.

Casinos do not bring positive economic development or create additional jobs
This fact is documented once again in a report on the statewide economic and social factors of Issue 3 recently published by Ohio's Hiram College.  Casinos have the opposite effect by ultimately pulling money out of the local economy. This harms existing businesses and causes thousands of hard working citizens to lose their current jobs.  The out of state companies that will operate these casinos will deplete the Ohio economy further as they take their profits elsewhere.  Casinos ultimately lead to the loss of jobs and small businesses in the communities in which they are located.

Casinos are predatory by their very nature.
Casinos make windfall profits for their owners from the gambling losses of our most vulnerable neighbors, deriving much of their profits from the poor who spend more than they can afford to lose.  Proximity to a casino also increases the levels of addiction. National studies indicate that people who live within 50 miles of a casino are twice as likely to become gambling addicts.
The social costs as a result of casino gambling will exceed revenue 3 to 1.
Let this sink in - for every dollar gambling generates, it will cost the taxpayers of Ohio three dollars in social costs. Problem gamblers ruin their lives and harm their families through increased debt, bankruptcy, home foreclosures, divorce, spousal abuse, child abuse and suicide.  Casino gambling always does more harm than good to families.  This amendment is economic nonsense in a time when we most desperately need sound, sustainable economic policies.
Law enforcement will need increased budgets & manpower to manage higher crime rates.
Nationwide, studies of existing casinos and surrounding communities have consistently found that crime rates increase by 10% each year after a casino opens, including violent crimes against people.  In addition, 40% of all white collar crime is rooted in the gambling industry.
The casino owners do not care about our state or our citizens
The proponents of Issue 3, just like their predecessors, allege they want to operate casinos in order to help the citizens of Ohio.  Nothing could be further from the truth.  Their well crafted promises of economic development, jobs and millions in revenue are motivated by greed, not by good will.  In reality, they are seeking extravagant profits for themselves and are fear-mongers, not benefactors
It is bad public policy to allow for-profit casino interests to write their own section of the Ohio Constitution.
Yet, this is precisely what they have done.  They wrote the language in the proposed amendment and they paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to gather signatures to place their self-serving proposal on this November's ballot. Their language not only grants them an exclusive monopoly on casino gambling for all time, it also dramatically limits the ability of the Ohio General Assembly to regulate their activities.  The amendment specifically prohibits our state government from controlling the days or hours of operation, the size of the bets or even the types of gambling that will be allowed.
The language of the constitutional amendment is frightening and has loopholes
In fact, the language states these monopolies can inflict on our citizens any type of gambling that is currently allowed in any other adjoining state or any new types of gambling these states may experiment with in the future, including live sports betting. These casino interests even dictated the maximum amount they will pay in taxes and wrote in an amount that is dramatically lower than in some of the surrounding states.  Other language in the amendment creates a loophole stipulating they will not pay any taxes when cash is directly used to place the bets.

We understand that the gambling industry is well organized and well funded to exploit the current economic pain and fear experienced by so many Ohioans.  Issue 3 is not about jobs.  It is about altering the very fabric of our life together.  That is why Ohio citizens have voted consistently and overwhelmingly against bringing predatory casino gambling into our communities each of the previous four times this has been on the ballot.

We urge every United Methodist congregation in Ohio to be a public witness against Issue 3.  There is no legal prohibition against churches taking a stance on ballot issues.  Please join us in this endeavor as we abide by our Social Principles and live out our Three Simple Rules - Do no harm, do good, and stay in love with God.

____________________________________________________________
If  I could add my humble 2 cents:
It a historical fact that Ohio will recover from the current economic and job loss problem- it always has. But we will never recover from gambling located in our neighborhoods. Once in (and growing) you can never vote 'em out.

Personally, I could keep blinders to the temptations and so could many who can control their "pleasure gambling"- but there will be untold numbers who will get hooked. Consider the small children who would grow up thinking the corner casino is no different than the corner movie.

All the money we're talking about- which is going into state coffers and job creating- that's the money Ohio citizens have lost & I'll bet many of the addicted will be looking for help from that same treasury.

Once the casinos get a good foothold, can prostitution be far behind??  That will also create a lot of new jobs.
